Gay From Gaylord

Year of production: 2015. Running Time: 26:33 min

Color / Sound / Subtitled

It’s not easy being gay in America, and even harder in Gaylord, a predominately White, small conservative town in northern Michigan. How does a teenager cope in a town where differences are exposed? Gay from Gaylord is a coming-(out)-of-age story.

The documentary film Gay From Gaylord follows Chris Ryan, a stand-up comedian and witty MSU student, on a journey back to his roots.  He recalls deep personal high school experiences while coming to terms with being gay. Sometimes, the best comic routine is autobiographical, and you’ll find that the material used by Chris (and friends) is anything but simple. Interviews with other students who identify as part of the LGBT community offer an array of perspectives on gay issues. They also find a voice through comedy despite adversity.

What was my role in the making of this film? Well I was the Director of Photography, Film Editor and Art Director of the film. From the videography, audio and entire aesthetic design concept of the documentary I definitely held let this story lead my creative abilities for it's wild and glorious ride.

From Left to Right: Jack Co-Director of Photography and Film Editor, myself, and Chris the Star of the documentary at the Gay From Gaylord film screening at the Detroit Institute of Art.

"The documentary Gay From Gaylord was accepted in the Traverse City Film Festival and The Detroit Film Festival. It won the Juried Award in the FREEP Film Festival April of 2016."
